It’s a practical picture—plant the seed, water it, wait. But the inverted tree asks us to reverse the arrows. It suggests that energy—call it insight, inspiration, or the sacred—presses downward. Our job isn’t to manufacture meaning but to shape containers strong enough to receive it. When the container fractures, life looks like chaos. When it holds, life looks like grace.

Thanks for reading Darc’s Substack! The current isn’t stingy; it overflows. The problem isn’t supply—it’s structure. A vessel that’s too rigid shatters under pressure. A vessel that’s too loose leaks. Either way, the outcome is the same: reality feels fragmented. The inverted map invites a humbler engineering question: not “How do I force outcomes?” but “What kind of vessel am I building—habits, relationships, institutions—that can hold what’s already trying to arrive?”

2) Roots above changes what “rooted” means

If the roots are in the unseen, “being grounded” is less about digging deeper into opinion and more about aligning with a current you don’t control. In practical terms, this looks like a life ordered around first principles—truth-telling, attention, patience—so that energy descends cleanly. When “rooted” slips into fear, the branches clutch. When rooted in reverence or love, the branches open, even through storm.

3) A map of flow, not a diagram of parts

The inverted tree isn’t an org chart of the cosmos; it’s a river delta. There are channels where energy narrows into form (discipline, law, boundary), channels where it widens into force (mercy, generosity, creative surge), and a central current that reconciles the two (balance, coherence, beauty). If you read your day as a flow map, you start noticing where the stream accelerates, where it eddies, and where it floods—then adjust the banks accordingly.

4) Breakage is part of making

We treat cracks as failure. But if life descends as pressure, breakage is diagnostic, not damning. A cracked vessel isn’t evidence that the current hates you; it’s an invitation to re-form. In personal life, that might mean shedding an identity that worked at one stage but can’t hold the next. In a community, it might mean redesigning a process that preserved order at the cost of aliveness. The point of the inverted map is not to avoid shattering forever, but to learn repair. A good vessel is not one that never breaks; it’s one that can be mended into strength.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

a flower seen through a pair of purple tinted glasses

Personal Lens

When I’ve read my days “from below,” I’ve assumed progress depends on more fuel and more force. When I flip the tree, my questions change. If insight is upstream and already flowing, why am I not catching it? Usually because my container is misaligned. I rush where patience is required, or I cling where release is wiser. The inverted tree makes failure feel less like a moral sentence and more like hydraulics: wrong angle, wrong wall thickness, wrong tolerances. The fix is practical—change a routine, set a boundary, widen a tight place, tighten a leaky one—and also moral in the oldest sense: become sound enough to hold what’s given.

Fear and love are competing root systems in me. When fear roots the tree, my branches knot: I over-specify, hoard control, and the flow diverts around me. When love roots the tree, I become porous without collapsing; I can say no without closing, yes without dissolving. The current doesn’t need my drama; it needs my integrity.

Broader Ripples

Scale the image from person to culture and the diagnosis sharpens. Institutions are vessels. Some were cast for pressures that no longer exist; others are thin-walled where they need ribbing. When new energy descends—technological, demographic, spiritual—we see cracks. We can blame the current (“too much change”) or condemn the vessel (“burn it down”). The inverted tree offers a third path: recast. Keep the function—contain, channel, distribute—and remake the form to match the real pressures of now. In civic terms: design for transparency where opacity once sufficed; for subsidiarity where centralization once worked; for iterative repair where perfectionism used to stall.

The same applies to movements and markets. A wave of capital or attention pours in; containers not built for it rupture. The question isn’t whether the flow should stop; it’s how to shape governance, norms, and rituals that can hold it without killing it.

Counterpoint

Skeptics will say the inverted tree is a pretty metaphor that smuggles hierarchy back into our lives: “roots above, branches below” can justify authority that never answers to earth. Worse, talk of “vessels” can excuse harm—“it broke because you were unworthy”—a spiritualized victim-blame. The critique deserves respect. Any grand map can be misused, and metaphors don’t fix material causes.

But maps can also keep us honest. The inverted tree only helps if it increases responsibility where you stand. If you are “above,” your duty is temperance: don’t dump pressure faster than people can build structure. If you are “below,” your duty is craft: build structure that can welcome what arrives. Love, in this frame, is not something you feel; it is what everything is made of, felt through nervous systems that translate the field into sensation.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

energy pouring into a vessel in smooth cascades

Physics, in its own way, agrees that “solid” is a story. Matter is excitations of fields. Light is not an object but a relationship between frequency, charge, and space. What we call particles are stable ripples—standing waves in a sea we cannot see. Coherence yields pattern; noise yields heat. None of this proves that love is the field. It does, however, loosen the grip of naive realism. If all forms are expressions of an underlying, continuous something, calling that something love is not a retreat into sentimentality. It’s an attempt to speak about motive: the bias toward connection, pattern, and emergence.

Consider two consequences of this reframe.

First, “lack of love” is a real experience—numbness, cruelty, harm—but not a metaphysical zero. In the river image, there are bends, dams, and swamps. Trauma is turbulence. Indifference is silt. The current remains, but the flow is misaligned. You don’t deny pain by saying this; you refuse to grant it the last word.

Second, skill grows possible. If love is energy, you can learn to work with it the way an engineer works with light: distinguish coherence from glare, reflection from absorption, signal from noise. Kabbalah calls this balance—the middle pillar that reconciles force and form. Not a bland compromise, but a disciplined channel that keeps the river from flooding or drying out.

Personal Lens

When I treat love as energy, my choices change shape. I’m less tempted to chase approval, because approval is only a mirror—useful for alignment, dangerous when worshiped. I start looking for flow conditions. Sleep, food, and friendship stop being lifestyle boxes and become engineering tasks: stabilize the vessel so the current can do its work. Boundaries stop sounding like walls and start reading as waveguides: structures that keep a signal from scattering.

This doesn’t make life softer. It makes it clearer. When conflict emerges, I ask: where is the interference? Is the form too rigid—rules choking the flow? Or too loose—flooding without direction? If I can’t hear the signal, am I drowning in noise (constant stimulation), or starving the system (chronic isolation)? The more I ask these questions, the more I notice that people rarely “lack love” in an absolute sense. We lack alignment. We mistake adrenaline for connection, novelty for meaning, and control for safety. Then we wonder why the music grows thin.

Broader Ripples

Scaled up, the lens exposes familiar cultural traps. Our platforms reward amplitude, not coherence—volume over signal. Our institutions often valorize form without force (bureaucracy) or force without form (charisma without guardrails). Public discourse toggles between these poles. One camp insists on rules as salvation; the other insists on liberation as cure. Both are partial truths; neither sustains a culture alone. The middle pillar—balance—rarely trends. It is slower, quieter, and far harder to monetize.

Yet the same physics metaphor hints at a civic skill set. We can build containers that protect flow: norms that dignify disagreement, rhythms that counter burnout, practices that let people be changed by contact rather than shattered by it. This looks unglamorous: consistent meetings, shared rituals, generous interpretations, honest exits. But every healthy community I’ve seen does versions of these. They are cultural waveguides. They make room for love to act like what it is—energy seeking expression through form.

Counterpoint: Isn’t “love as energy” just a poetic cover for reality avoidance?

A fair concern. Metaphors can anesthetize; “It’s all love” has been used to minimize harm and bypass accountability. If love equals everything, it can become a permission slip for anything. The answer is not to throw away the lens but to insist on its teeth. Energy models don’t erase consequences; they sharpen them. If love is the current of creation, then misalignment carries costs. Harm is not “okay”; it is a real distortion that demands correction. Boundaries, justice, and repair are part of channeling the flow. In Kabbalistic terms: mercy without severity becomes indulgence; severity without mercy becomes cruelty. Balance is the work.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" It doesn’t trivialize pain; it contextualizes it within a larger current that keeps seeking paths through us. The task becomes architectural: build the vessel that can carry the light you’re already in.

A small experiment for the week: choose one everyday interaction—a checkout line, a status meeting, a text exchange—and treat it as a coherence exercise. Slow your breathing for thirty seconds beforehand. Set one boundary (clear ask or limit). Offer one act that reduces noise (a precise appreciation, a clarifying question, a shorter message). Then notice: did the flow improve?

Everything you touch is made of love. Sometimes the river is clear; sometimes it is silted, sometimes dammed, sometimes rushing. Your part is not to manufacture water, but to shape banks, remove debris, and keep the channel honest. Not a greeting-card flourish—the claim. Love as brick and mortar of matter, bond of space, fuel of time. Souls in stardust suits, living behind walls of flesh and habit, calling it a world. The body spends years wiring a bioelectric sensorium, then spends the rest maintaining what it built and negotiating its slow decline. And still, love remains—the one thing we make that no one can take.

Thanks for reading Darc’s Substack! Our labels follow how things meet us. Just as you show up differently to different people, objects present differently across situations. Take pH: the standard definition tracks hydrogen ion activity to map acidity and alkalinity. That’s a useful slice of what’s happening. In bioelectric contexts you can also watch how tiny charge dynamics ride those shifts and change how tissues behave. Different descriptions, different doors into the same room.

And here’s my wager: if the smallest theater of things is vibration—strings, modes, resonances—then the coherence that holds forms together is what I’m willing to call love. Not as a lab result, but as a working name for the energy that makes a world endure.

Perception as Translation

If we want science-grade honesty, self-observation needs double diligence. We can’t stand outside ourselves to measure the instrument doing the measuring. What and how we see isn’t a window onto a world; it’s a rendering. Eyes are more like Bayesian guessers than cameras—sampling fragments, predicting the rest, updating on the fly. Our senses are biological transducers: they convert light, pressure, and chemicals into bioelectric signals; the brain decodes those signals using patterns laid down by history, culture, and need.

Qualia make this plain. The same score swells one listener’s chest, barely stirs another, and for someone with synesthesia, it paints moving color across the mind. None of these experiences is “wrong.” They’re different maps of the same terrain drawn with different tools. The act of attending also changes the encounter—what we ask of a thing shapes what it gives back.

This perspective matters for what follows. If the universe mostly “speaks” in oscillations—timing, resonance, phase—then what we call love may show up as a distinct kind of coherence in that conversation: aligned, low-friction, generative. Hatred and fear may feel like distortion—out of tune, high-cost, brittle. How we frame an experience tunes our own system and alters what is available to us in it. We live by the usefulness of our models, not their completeness. How we look is part of what we find; methods are lenses, not just mirrors.

Imagination as the Workshop

Creation usually starts upstream of action. We see it in the mind before we touch the world. If love is the building block pouring through existence—as Kabbalah suggests with its image of light flowing into vessels—then the mind is where that flow is given form. Thought is a kind of shaping: attention sets the mold, desire supplies pressure, and practice hardens the edges.

On this view, the energy we bring to imagination matters. The steadiness of our inner oscillation—the strength and rhythm of wanting—becomes the frequency we carry into making. As effort and environment line up, the pieces we need tend to gather. Call it the law of attraction, or the ordinary miracle of aligned focus recruiting resources. Either way, coherence does the heavy lifting: it lowers friction, clarifies next steps, and draws collaborators who “tune” to the same pattern—assuming skill, time, context, and luck are not working against it.

This isn’t a claim that wishing replaces work. It’s a claim that inner order makes outer work more likely to hold. Imagination lays the blueprint; attention pours the foundation; action raises the frame. If love is the substrate, mind is where it’s measured and shaped.

From here, the question is practical: how do we tune attention so the forms we build are stable—and worth inhabiting?

Vibration as First Principle

Unsplash

We tune attention by returning to an old discipline: imaginative play. Wave/particle duality reminds us that form and flow co-arise. That’s especially true when we’re birthing an idea into the world. First we hold the form in the mind—kept intact by desire and the quiet pleasure of seeing it work. We feed the image with gratitude and the joy of its imagined usefulness. Then we know—not as proof, but as practiced trust—that what we’ve made inside is already moving toward expression.

Call that trust faith. Not the property of a religion, but a human capacity grown and tested inside a person. It works for atheists and mystics alike because, in the end, the laws of nature run regardless of anyone’s belief in them. Sound, light, matter—electrons, atoms, bodies—so much of what we touch or infer presents as oscillation. At the scales we can feel, things can rest; underneath, motion and fluctuation never fully disappear. As attention deepens, the rhythms get audible: the universe plays a time signature, and the music of making becomes something we can feel.

Reason warns us that sensation is a rendering, not reality. Fair. But distortion doesn’t only enter through the senses; it also slips in when we force living processes into categories too small for them. Often the mismatch is ours: we haven’t yet built the right concepts to hold what we’re encountering. That doesn’t forbid practice. It invites it. We can work with what we have and test it in our own relationship to frequency, oscillation, and stillness—through how we breathe, how we focus, how we return attention when it drifts. Little acts of tuning, repeated, bring the inner instrument into key with the work we’re trying to do. If attention is an instrument, resonance is how it meets the world.

Resonance and Self-Organization

Oscillations have a bias toward order. Patterns meet patterns. A ripple finds another ripple and the interference can cancel, amplify, or redirect. Choirs lock pitch. Pendulum clocks on the same shelf fall into step. In complex systems, this shows up as self-organization: parts line up without a conductor because timing itself carries instruction.

That’s the image I’m pointing to when I say “love energy.” Call it the life-fostering tendency of coherence—the way aligned patterns invite more alignment. Whether we steer it or not, it keeps creating: it groups, bonds, and settles into forms that match the feeling we hold most steadily. Fear can shatter that forming by jittering the signal. The mold wobbles; the pour doesn’t set.

I’m not claiming laboratory proof that love is a physical field. I am claiming that coherence behaves like a field in lived experience: it lowers friction, invites coupling, and makes durable forms more likely. Metaphysically, I name that field love. Practically, I watch how steadier attention and cleaner motives change what gathers around them.

Light, Darkness, and Edge

Traditions keep saying light is strongest in darkness. Physically, contrast makes brightness pop; spiritually, presence is most felt where it was absent. The edge of a thing—the outline that lets us name it—requires contrast. Push brightness far enough and you lose detail; saturation becomes a kind of darkness. Edges need limits; limits give forms.

None of that empties the dark. It’s part of the same fabric. We don’t know light without dark, nor form without the power that defines and constrains it. The energy we can’t see doesn’t stop being energy; our eyes are narrow instruments tuned to a tight band. If love is the substrate, it keeps acting whether or not we can sense it in the moment.

Gratitude makes this tangible. The felt thank-you and the table you lean on are not the same, but they rhyme. One is a human resonance; the other is matter arranged by many hands. Someone imagined a form, gathered the means, and tuned wood into use. Our recognition stabilizes its role; seeing and using are part of how forms persist.

The Observer, Honestly

For years we dismissed “observer effects” as bias. Now we admit two truths at once. First: in psychology and social research, expectations and methods can shape outcomes. Second: in quantum experiments, measurement changes systems—not because beliefs beam reality into being, but because the act of measuring is an interaction. Both insights warn us to be careful with our categories.

So here’s my wager stated cleanly: if love is the name for high-order coherence in human life, then holding a steadier, kinder pattern changes what interactions are possible. It doesn’t magic physics away. It tunes our participation. Start from there and the claims get simpler: attention shapes action; action shapes systems; systems return signals that either reinforce or disrupt the pattern we began with.

A Bolder Hypothesis

This is where I step past the lab: love—the emotion, the practiced stance, the felt current—operates as the highest-order coherence we can access. Under that coherence, unlikely alignments occur that look like luck from the outside and like inevitability from within. Call them small miracles. Science may not yet be designed to test that claim. We can still test it in a life.

Counterpoint: The Discipline of Not Over-Claiming

Unsplash

There’s a simpler story that asks less of the universe and more of us. In that story, physics does not require “love.” Fields, waves, particles—none of the core equations need a variable for affection or intention. Wave/particle duality isn’t a license to pour metaphysics into the gaps; it’s a warning that our categories are provisional. String theory itself is a speculative framework, elegant and unconfirmed, not a settled map of the small. To claim that strings are literally “love” is to move from analogy to assertion without new evidence.

“All things are frequency” also turns slippery when pressed. Many phenomena can be modeled as oscillations, but not everything is best described that way, and “frequency” without units, amplitude, or a defined system is more atmosphere than argument. Frequency can be a useful metaphor for rhythm and alignment; it becomes pseudoscience when it pretends to be a measurement.

The same caution applies to pH. It’s not a vibe; it’s a definition—negative log of hydrogen ion activity—useful because it predicts reactions across contexts. Yes, in living tissue,

electrical gradients matter; bioelectric patterning and membrane potentials are real. But that’s an additional lens, not a replacement for pH, and it doesn’t smuggle “love” into the lab by the back door.

What about the “observer”? In quantum experiments, measurement changes systems because interacting with a particle changes its state; that’s an apparatus effect, not evidence that belief writes reality. In the social sciences, expectations and demand characteristics can shape outcomes; the remedy is better blinding and design, not abandoning objectivity. If we say “attention shapes experience,” we should mean it in the ordinary, testable ways: attention changes what we notice, how we behave, and how others respond. Powerful enough, but human-scale.

The law of attraction reads differently under this light. Set a goal, attend to it daily, and you’ll notice opportunities aligned with it because you’re primed to notice. You’ll also act more, persist longer, and recruit collaborators. That’s selection, reinforcement, and network effects—not magic. Survivorship bias hides the misses, confirmation bias crowns the hits. The story of inevitability forms after the fact. None of this empties the experience of meaning. It just removes the mystique and leaves the work.

“Resonance” and “self-organization” deserve similar grounding. Pendulum clocks synchronize through energy exchange; choirs lock pitch because feedback reduces error; metronomes phase-lock on a movable board by sharing vibrations. Coherence emerges because coupled systems minimize friction and energy cost. It’s beautiful—and entirely describable without assigning a cosmic motive. Love may ride these dynamics; it isn’t required to run them.

As for light and darkness: perceptual contrast and saturation explain why brightness “pops” against black and why pushing intensity can erase detail. The poetry of “light so strong it becomes darkness” can stand as poetry. Confusing it for physics blurs both.

And yet, none of this obliges us to cynicism. A careful skeptic can grant that metaphors move people, and movements change worlds. The materialist asks us to separate poetry from proof so both can breathe. When we want to claim effects, we can operationalize them. If “love” means steadier attention, warmer appraisal of others, slower reactivity, and a wider circle of concern, then we can measure downstream changes: heart-rate variability, sleep quality, helping behavior, conflict recovery, creative output. If “coherence” means reduced internal contradiction and clearer priority, we can test whether it raises follow-through and lowers stress markers. If practices like gratitude or loving-kindness increase prosocial behavior or resilience, randomized trials can catch that signal (and have, in specific domains). None of this requires a new fundamental force. It requires clarity about what’s being claimed—and humility about what isn’t.

This counterpoint has one more, harder ask: don’t turn “coherence” into moral geometry. Harmony isn’t automatically good; it’s just efficient. Groups can cohere around harm as easily as around care. Alignment amplifies whatever it’s aligned to. The question is not only whether you can tune; it’s what you tune to, and who pays when you’re in key.

So the skeptic’s offer is restraint, not dismissal. Keep your metaphysics if it feeds courage and care—but tag it as metaphysics. When you want to persuade across worldviews, translate: “love” becomes prosocial motivation; “frequency” becomes attention patterns and embodied timing; “field” becomes social networks and feedback loops. Predict specific, observable changes and look for disconfirming evidence, not only confirming stories. Let the parts that can be tested get tested. Let the rest remain what it is: a stance toward life.

Even under the skeptic’s light, one claim survives: the patterns we practice become the worlds we inhabit.

Sidebar: Three We start in confusion and, through effort, escalate toward clarity. We’re tempted to treat matter as something to transcend, a messy staging area where we practice leaving. Even when we use poetic language—“light,” “higher self,” “elevation”—the compass needle points the same way: away from density.

That picture has helped many. It gives direction and discipline. But it also leaves a quiet ache: what do we do with our bodies, our bills, our families, our neighborhoods—the stubborn facts of matter? If the point is up, these become delays or detours.

Hidden Layers

The river that condenses

A different metaphor: creation flows downward like rain that thickens into rivers. At the top, energy is subtle—nearly invisible, like mist on a mountain. As it descends, it slows and condenses. Ideas become images, images become urges, urges become choices, choices become habits and structures. Not a staircase, but precipitation. Not escape, but arrival.

An inverted tree

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

roots in the sky, branches on the ground

Picture a tree planted upside down. Its roots are sunk in clear sky; its trunk carries living current toward the ground; its branches push into the world we can touch. The “fruit” is not a passport to leave earth—it’s nourishment that shows up in how we speak, build, love, mend, and make. In this view, matter isn’t a mistake; it’s the ripening stage.

Form, force, and balance

The downward flow needs three companions. Force gives momentum. Form offers a container so the current doesn’t spill and vanish. Balance keeps the two in conversation so neither turns reckless: force without form floods; form without force petrifies. Together, they turn inspiration into a life.

Personal Lens

Consider a person who wakes with a bright, formless sense that something wants to change. At breakfast it becomes an image: a community garden on a vacant lot. By lunch it becomes a call with a friend. By evening, it becomes a short list: who owns the lot; who has tools; when could we meet. Weeks later there’s a sketch, a small budget, a Saturday crew. Months later, tomatoes. Years later, a tradition.

Nothing “ascended.” Energy descended—condensing from a glimmer into soil under fingernails. Along the way, force was needed (enthusiasm), form was needed (permits, schedules), and balance held them together (don’t burn out, don’t freeze up). The “spiritual” part wasn’t above this process. A good spreadsheet, a repaired sink, a well-run meeting—these don’t block the sacred; they host it.

Conflict becomes a chance to refine the vessel. Sharp edges in a relationship aren’t proof of failure; they are the places where form is being shaped to hold more life.

Institutions become orchards. Their purpose isn’t to send the select “up,” but to channel living current into shared structures—schools, clinics, transit, art—so fruit is reachable by many hands.

Ethics becomes engineering. Not a list of taboos, but the design requirements that let more energy flow without harm: boundaries that protect, practices that stabilize, corrections that keep the river clear.

When we treat matter as the end of the line rather than the enemy, we stop acting like tourists and start behaving like gardeners.

Counterpoint: The Case For Ascent

There is real wisdom in the upward path. Pulling back from noise to gain perspective matters. Practices that “lift” attention—prayer, meditation, fasting, retreat—can break compulsions and remind us we are more than our appetites. Some seasons require a mountaintop before we can return to the valley with clean eyes. If we focus only on descent, we risk excusing every impulse as “energy” and avoiding the discipline that keeps us honest. The two movements need each other: ascent clears; descent commits.

Reflection Prompts

If creation is a river that thickens as it falls, what is currently trying to condense in your life—from hunch to habit?

Where are you overemphasizing force (push, passion) without form (structure), or form without force? What one adjustment would bring balance?

What “fruit” in your day—an email, a meal, a repair—might be treated as a sacred endpoint rather than a trivial task?

Which part of you is still trying to “get out of here”? What would change if the point were to land here more fully?

Close: Returning to the Paradox

The old question—up or down—may be the wrong one. The inverted tree suggests a cycle: we rise for perspective, then return so the current can finish its journey as bread, paint, policy, kindness, code. Roots in heaven, branches in matter. The test isn’t how high we climb, but how faithfully we deliver.

Small experiment (this week): Choose one tiny act that brings an idea down a notch—make the first call, sketch the outline, label a jar, set a 20-minute timer and build the bare minimum. Notice how the river behaves when you give it a channel, however humble.

I’d love to hear what you try—and what fruit begins to show. Where did the flow surprise you? In Kabbalah’s Tree of Life, creation cascades from subtle to dense, from crown to kingdom. The current descends through three pillars: force (expansion), form (limitation), and the middle way (balance). In Tarot, the Major Arcana are snapshots of this flow as it crosses thresholds in a human life; the Minors are the textures of daily experience. Science offers a parallel metaphor: matter is not tiny billiard balls but excitations of fields. Coherence makes a laser; decoherence makes a flashlight. In each tongue—mystical, symbolic, scientific—the story rhymes: a single energy differentiates as it moves. Call it light, call it field, call it love.

If we start there, pain becomes legible. On the pillar of form, boundaries are the chisels that let anything take shape. A boundary can protect—or it can calcify into cruelty. On the pillar of force, the overflow of vitality creates; unchanneled, it floods. The middle pillar holds the tension so the river doesn’t collapse its banks or dry into a ditch. Suffering often lives where balance fails: too much contraction without compassion, or too much expansion without structure. The current hasn’t vanished; it’s become incoherent.

Unsplash

Tarot mirrors this dance. The Chariot shows disciplined drive—force harnessed. The Empress shows creative outpouring—force abundant. The Hanged Man inverts our point of view—form embraced. The Tower strikes when false structures must fall; Death closes what cannot continue so something truer can emerge. None of these are sentimental. They’re readings of flow: where it pools, where it breaks through, where it demands re-alignment.

So what do we call “lack of love”? Consider three layers:

Misalignment. Two people may speak in different channels of the same current: one offers structure (time, reliability), the other expects effusive expression (words, touch). Both are giving real energy; it just doesn’t land. The radio is tuned a few kilohertz off.

Obstruction. Trauma, fear, or scarcity constricts the river. To protect ourselves, we narrow the channel. Love feels small because the pipe is. This isn’t moral failure; it’s hydraulics.

Co-option. Systems—families, workplaces, governments—sometimes divert the flow for control or profit. Love becomes performance, tithed for belonging. The field is still there, but the measurement apparatus is rigged.

None of this absolves harm. Naming interference is not an excuse for it. It is a way to diagnose it.

A gentle bridge to physics helps keep our metaphors honest. Coherence doesn’t mean niceness; it means alignment. A coherent wave can cut steel (laser) or carry data worldwide (fiber optics). The same energy, incoherent, becomes glare that illuminates nothing in particular. In human terms: aligned love becomes clear boundaries, skillful conflict, care with a spine. Incoherent love becomes clinging, flattery, martyrdom, or domination. The wattage isn’t the issue. The phase is.

If the universe is made of love, why does cruelty exist? Because energy in form obeys law, not preference. Boundaries without mercy turn law into weapon. Force without form turns charisma into consumption. Balance—the hard middle path—asks us to integrate both. When we won’t, the world corrects us. Sometimes gently. Sometimes like lightning.

Hidden layers worth noting:

History. Traditions guarded potent maps because misuse is real. Mystical tools without integration can unmake more than they make. Yet gatekeeping also obscured wisdom that helps ordinary people navigate their lives. Today, we can democratize the maps without trivializing them: teach the hydraulics of love plainly, emphasize practice, reject guru theater.

Psychology. What looks like “no love” may be the body rejecting a channel it was punished for trusting. If touch was dangerous, words might be safer. If words were barbed, service might “feel” like love. Therapy, somatic work, and good friendships widen the pipe gradually, restoring signal where noise has been the rule.

Economics and culture. A culture that monetizes attention profits from incoherence. Outrage keeps us scrolling; irony keeps us distant; loneliness keeps us buying. Coherent love—stable families, trusting communities, reputations built on repair—can look uneconomical in the short term. In the long term, it’s the only economy that doesn’t hollow us out.

Personal lens. I’ve seen love look like a “no.” A firm boundary that prevented an avoidable collapse. I’ve seen love look like silence, because the wiser word needed time. I’ve also seen my “love” blur into busyness—doing so much for someone that I didn’t have to feel with them. What changed wasn’t the claim that “everything is love,” but my calibration: am I aligning force and form, or am I just lighting up the room with incoherent wattage?

Counterpoint: Maybe “Love” is the Wrong Word

A strong objection is that calling everything “love” dilutes the moral clarity we need. If cruelty is a “distortion of love,” do we risk spiritualizing abuse? Shouldn’t we reserve “love” for acts that meet criteria—care, consent, responsibility—and label the rest accurately?

This critique deserves respect. Language shapes action. One answer is pragmatic: use precise terms for behavior (harm, neglect, manipulation), enforce boundaries, and make repair non-optional. Meanwhile, keep the ontological claim in the background as a compass, not a loophole. If the base note is love, then the work is to re-tune—not to rename wrong notes as “jazz.”

<a class="image-link image2 cruelty? Where is love in disaster zones, in betrayals, in systems that grind people down? “Love is everything” can sound like a dodge unless it can look suffering in the eye.

Thanks for reading Darc’s Substack! When people hurt each other, the assumption is that love ran out. Resources—time, attention, safety—were finite; competition followed. Another story flips it: love is an inner feeling only. If you don’t feel it, it isn’t there. In both stories, lack looks like a void.

But what if “lack” is not emptiness—what if it’s interference?

Hidden layers

1) Kabbalah’s map of flow.
Kabbalah imagines reality as a descent of energy through the Tree of Life—from source (Kether) to the everyday (Malkuth). The descent doesn’t happen in a single chute; it channels through three pillars: Severity (form), Mercy (force), and the Middle Pillar (balance). Together, they form a “Triune Flow”: boundaries, energy, harmony.

Seen this way, “lack of love” isn’t an empty pipeline; it’s a mis-tuned system. Severity without Mercy becomes brittleness or cruel rigidity. Mercy without Severity becomes flood: indulgence without shape. The Middle Pillar isn’t mushy compromise; it’s a laser—coherence that cuts through confusion and integrates opposites.

2) Tarot as mirror of the current.
Tarot’s structure echoes this flow. The Major Arcana trace transitional thresholds; the Minor Arcana are vessels of qualities. It’s not that cards cause events; they reflect the state of the field moving through a life. In this language, “lack of love” shows up not as absence but as scatter—like a beam degraded into noise. The current is still light; it’s lost alignment.

3) Physics as a quiet ally.
Physics reframes matter as excitations of fields; solidity is emergent, not primary. Coherence and decoherence, resonance and damping—these are technical words for whether a system is in tune. You don’t need to force the metaphor to feel its usefulness: imbalance isn’t a void; it’s phase shift, scattering, or saturation beyond a container’s design. The Kabbalists would say: Severity overpowers, or Mercy floods, and Balance has failed to hold them together.

Personal lens: the quiet mechanics of “not enough”

Think of a difficult week. You’re short with a partner. Emails turn curt. You don’t feel “loving.” If love were a commodity, you’d blame depletion. If love were only a feeling, you’d chase a mood. The Tree suggests a different diagnosis: your form/force channels are misaligned. Maybe you’ve over-tightened boundaries (Severity) to prevent overwhelm, and now your presence is brittle. Or you’ve said yes to everything (Mercy), and now your attention is a flood with nowhere to pool. Balance—coherence—has slipped.

Tarot would not scold; it might lay The Tower on the table to clear illusions, The High Priestess to filter for truth, and The World to remind you that endings feed beginnings. In that combination, the message isn’t “no love here.” It’s “the signal is there—unblock, realign, and it can move again.”

Broader Ripples: From an “I” Problem to a “We” Practice

Scale this up and you get culture. Institutions over-indexing Severity call it “order,” but it calcifies into harm. Systems drowning in Mercy call it “care,” but resources diffuse and nobody is truly held. Communities that cultivate the middle pathway aren’t lukewarm—they’re disciplined about coherence, which is why they can welcome both accountability and compassion. In the Tree’s terms, justice (Geburah) without mercy fractures; mercy (Chesed) without justice dissolves; held in Beauty (Tiphereth), they form something we actually want to live inside.

This framing also clarifies why change often feels like violence from the inside out. When structures we’ve built on sand fall, it’s not the universe withdrawing love; it’s an energy correction forcing coherence. The tradition calls these the “dark knights.” The cards name them Devil, Tower, Death—not as punishments, but thresholds that clear interference so imagination (Yesod) can carry a clean signal into life (Malkuth).

Counterpoint: Isn’t “love as energy” just rebranding physics and faith?

A fair pushback: mapping Kabbalah and Tarot onto physics risks category error. Electromagnetism isn’t compassion; the Higgs field isn’t mercy. And yes, it’s easy to turn “fields” into a mystical catchall that flatters our hopes while dodging hard evidence. We also risk moral confusion: if everything is “love,” do we launder cruelty as “misalignment” and let people off the hook?

These concerns are important safeguards. A clearer stance helps:

Category clarity. Kabbalah and Tarot are symbolic maps of meaning; physics is a quantitative map of behavior. The bridge here is metaphor, not identity. We use physics to discipline our imagination (favor coherence over vagueness), not to smuggle spirituality into science class.

Moral clarity. Naming interference does not excuse harm. If love is the base field, some configurations are still destructive. Boundaries, consequences, and repair are exactly how we realign the flow. In Kabbalistic terms, Severity serves love when it restrains predation; Mercy serves love when it refuses to abandon the possibility of return.

Pragmatic test. The claim should be useful. If thinking “interference, not void” helps you take a wiser action in the next five minutes—ask a better question, set a cleaner boundary, offer a truer no—keep it. If it muddies your responsibilities, drop it.

Reframe: From Scarcity to Signal

What if the everyday question isn’t “Is there love here?” but “How is love trying to move here—and what’s in the way?” Sometimes the answer is structural (redistribute resources, redesign the container). Sometimes it’s relational (learn each other’s channels, widen or soften a boundary). Sometimes it’s interior (heal a fear that kinks the pipe). The work is less about producing love from nothing and more about tuning, aligning, and clearing.

Coherence in practice doesn’t look like niceness. It looks like steady presence, transparent limits, and care that can say yes or no without drama. In physics language: less glare, more laser. In Tarot language: less scattered Wands, more Chariot. In Kabbalah: Mercy and Severity held in Beauty.

Reflection Prompts

Where in your life do you interpret “I don’t feel love” as “no love exists,” when the truer reading might be interference—overwhelm, fear, or misattuned channels?

Which pillar is overemphasized in a current situation—Severity (rigidity), Mercy (overgiving), or the Middle (avoidant compromise)? What would coherence look like for a week?

What structure, if added or removed, would let care actually land—one recurring check-in, one explicit boundary, one fewer platform pulling your attention?

Where have you confused intensity for alignment? What would a quieter, steadier signal of love be in that context?

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" If noise decreases and signal increases, you’ve found interference to clear. If not, adjust the container, not just the feeling.

Close

If love is the field we live in, then “not enough love” is usually not a vacuum but a distortion. Our task is less to manufacture love and more to become better conductors: to refine channels, right-size containers, and let boundaries and generosity cooperate rather than compete. The world doesn’t need brighter declarations; it needs cleaner signals. Coherence is not sentimental—it is merciful, severe, and, in the end, deeply human.

Thanks for reading Darc’s Substack!
